BFF Test: Does the First Friend Really Know You Best?
FriendQuiz Team |
If you've ever sent out a BFF test, you've probably wondered whether the first friend to answer is the one who knows you best. We looked at 46,700 quizzes made on FriendQuiz and the 133,505 friend results they collected. The short answer is no, not really. When we compare friends inside the same quizzes, the 1st result averages 5.73 out of 10, and results from the 10th friend onward average 5.70 out of 10. That is practically the same. Bigger gaps show up between individual answers in our sample. Friends got some answers right most of the time and usually missed others.
Who answers first, and why it looks like it matters
First, what "first" means here. Answers aren't timestamped one by one, so "1st result" simply means the first friend result that was saved for a quiz. It says nothing about who that friend is or how close you are.
If you take every quiz together, scores seem to drift down as more friends answer:
- 1st result: 31,581 results from 31,581 quizzes, average 6.02 out of 10, 6.3% scored 10 out of 10, 11.7% scored 0 to 3.
- 2nd or 3rd result: 37,835 results from 21,767 quizzes, average 6.01 out of 10, 9.1% scored 10 out of 10, 13.5% scored 0 to 3.
- 4th to 9th result: 42,126 results from 12,039 quizzes, average 5.82 out of 10, 8.8% scored 10 out of 10, 16.2% scored 0 to 3.
- 10th result or later: 21,964 results from 2,933 quizzes, average 5.70 out of 10, 7.7% scored 10 out of 10, 18.0% scored 0 to 3.
At first glance, early friends seem to do a bit better, and later friends land in the 0 to 3 range more often. Notice something odd, though. The 1st result is less likely to be a perfect score than the 2nd or 3rd.
The catch is that these rows mix very different quizzes. Every quiz with at least one answer has a 1st result, but only 2,933 quizzes reached a 10th. Quizzes that collect lots of results may simply be different from quizzes that collect only a few, so this comparison isn't really fair.
The fairer comparison: friends on the same quizzes
To compare like with like, we looked only at the 2,933 quizzes that got 10 or more friend results. Inside those quizzes, we compared the 1st friend with the 2nd and 3rd, the 4th to 9th, and everyone from the 10th on.
| Order of the result | Average score | Scored 10 out of 10 | Results |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st result | 5.73 out of 10 | 7.9% | 2,933 |
| 2nd or 3rd result | 5.75 out of 10 | 7.7% | 5,866 |
| 4th to 9th result | 5.67 out of 10 | 7.5% | 17,598 |
| 10th result or later | 5.70 out of 10 | 7.7% | 21,964 |
Here the pattern mostly disappears. The averages sit between 5.67 and 5.75 out of 10, and the share of perfect scores stays between 7.5% and 7.9%. The first friend has a very slightly higher share of 10 out of 10 scores, but the gap is tiny.
So if the first friend to answer doesn't top your list, don't read too much into it. In quizzes with many results, being first doesn't come with a meaningfully higher score.
The answers friends guess most easily
The bigger differences show up when we look at single questions. In a sample of quizzes, we checked how often friends picked the creator's correct answer and grouped the results by what that correct answer was. These answers were the easiest to guess:
- "Which city was I born in?" When the correct answer was "Chennai", friends got it 80.5% of the time (113 answers). "India" did even better at 93.4% (244 answers). India is a country rather than a city, but some creators marked it as their answer.
- "What is my dream destination?" Friends guessed "Korea" 70.1% of the time (117 answers) and "Japan" 58.9% of the time (1,053 answers).
- "What makes me happiest?" Friends guessed "Spending time with friends" 65.9% of the time (1,227 answers).
- "What is my favorite season?" Friends guessed "Winter" 64.9% of the time (2,380 answers).
Answers friends miss more often
At the other end, some true answers trip friends up:
- Iceland as a dream destination was guessed only 18.1% of the time (188 answers). Compare that with "Maldives" at 42.3% (515 answers), "New York" at 44.3% (458 answers), "Paris" at 51.6% (157 answers) and "Switzerland" at 52.3% (178 answers).
- Autumn and Spring were guessed 29.0% (642 answers) and 30.5% (453 answers) of the time, compared with 52.6% for "Summer" (770 answers).
- Eating well as what makes the creator happiest was guessed 30.3% of the time (465 answers), "Listening to music" 34.6% (615 answers) and "Traveling" 38.0% (764 answers).
- New York as a birth city was guessed 47.4% of the time (171 answers), while "London" reached 62.0% (221 answers).
In other words, if your favorite season is autumn or what makes you happiest is eating well, plenty of friends in our sample guessed wrong. If you want to see which answers come up most often overall, read our article on the most popular quiz answers.
How to use this when you make your own quiz
When you create a quiz, you get 10 suggested questions, each with 4 answer options. You can keep or rewrite any of them, and you mark the correct answer for every question. Here's how the numbers can help:
- Don't judge friends by who answers first. In quizzes with 10 or more results, the 1st friend and later friends score about the same. Share the link widely and let everyone give it a try.
- Be honest with your answers. A true answer that friends rarely guessed in our sample, like Iceland (18.1%) or Autumn (29.0%), can make your quiz more of a challenge.
- Expect easy points on answers friends guess often. If your true answers are things like Winter or Spending time with friends, friends got these right more often in our sample. That's fine, but your friends' scores may run higher.
- Look at your whole score list, not just one result. Your page lists every friend's score out of 10, so you can compare everyone at once.
- Get more people to answer. Our tips on getting friends to answer your quiz on WhatsApp can help you collect more results.

About these numbers
These figures cover quizzes created between 2026-07-30 and 2026-10-28, from a database snapshot taken on 2026-10-28 05:45:04 UTC. We used only aggregate counts, with no names or personal fields. Groups smaller than 10 quizzes are not shown.
- In that period there were 46,700 quizzes and 133,505 friend results. A friend result means one friend answering one quiz.
- The order of results is only the order they were saved. The data can't tell who the friends are or how close they are.
- The "all quizzes" rows mix different quizzes. The comparison inside the same 2,933 quizzes with 10 or more results is the fairer one.
- The single-answer figures come from a sample of 5,627 friend results (56,215 single answers) on 1,776 quizzes. We only show answers that appeared in at least 100 single answers and at least 10 different quizzes.
- Everything here is descriptive. It shows patterns, not causes.
